What makes really good horror fiction different from mediocre horror fiction are the characters. Psycho was a great movie in large part because Hitchock spent a half hour investing the audience in the fate of Marion Crane before she decided to take her fateful shower. If Hitch had started the movie with her in her motel room, he might have startled the audience but the movie would have been forgotten long before now. The audience needs to get involved with the characters in a horror story... either hoping something good or something bad is going to happen to them. Unfortunately, the married couple in Richard Schiver's "Music of the Gods" fail to leave much of an impression on readers, and the story, although technically proficient, seems somewhat listless.Donald and Susan are a long time married couple whose marriage is falling apart. In an effort to perhaps save the marriage, Donald plans a weekend getaway at a secluded Bed and Breakfast. The holiday proves anything but festive, however, as the couple continue to bicker until Donald loses control of their car trying to avoid hitting a truck and winds up smashing it into a wooden fence. The couple faces a one mile walk to the nearest town and another hour or two of continued arguing and complaining.
Soon, however, Donald begins to notice that the countryside they are walking through is definitely not normal, and they start to see... and hear... some strange things. By the time they arrive at an abandoned building at the side of the road, Donald is definitely suspicious of his surroundings, especially when he sees a telephone booth in perfect condition next to the rundown building... a phone that starts ringing. Because "Music" is a 15-page short story, neither Donald nor readers have to wait very long to learn just why this stretch of the road is as creepy as it seems.
Author Schiver does a good job with the details of "Music," especially his description of the surroundings through which Donald and Susan travel. The couple definitely go on one spooky hike. Despite Schiver's ability to establish mood, however, I found myself rather uninvolved with the last part of the story. In part, it's because I had a pretty good idea how the story was going to end, but, in larger part, it's because I really didn't care about Donald or Susan. Neither of them are particularly likable, but they seem more like mildly annoying petulant children rather than the type of characters one hopes to see come to a bad end in a horror story. By the time the story ended, my reaction was more a shrug of the shoulders than anything else.
"Music of the Gods" isn't a bad story. It's well written with some creepy imagery, especially the rundown building the couple encounters. However, it just lacks the spark needed to get the reader completely immersed in the story. Instead, there's at best some academic curiosity about the true nature of the surroundings and what's going to happen to the couple. I would still give the story a mild recommendation, especially since Schiver offers it for free. However, "Music of the Gods" more closely resembles elevator music than a gold record/

Music of the Gods edition by Richard Schiver Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This story is REALLY short. It took me only a few minutes to read it. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised, but a bit frustrated by the poor job of editing. I mean REALLY poor job of editing. But if you can get past that, it's not a bad little read.
Here is another short story that didn't disappoint. Richard Schiver was right on point, something not many authors explore the way he did. The tension mounts from the beginning to the end. Quite the literary journey. I will definitely recommend it
This is a quick little story that shows two characters who have been married for years and have grown apart. They bicker constantly and are always fighting. Donald takes his wife Susan on a weekend vacation into upstate New York and they get lost.
The story shows what can happen in an instant if one is not careful. Check it out!
A very good quick read. Quite intriguing, keeps you reading and wondering what's going to happen. The suspense builds even when you are sure you know how it will finish. The price was great for this short and the read was quite enjoyable. I am glad I tried this and will most likely try more from Richard Schiver. Thanks for telling the story so well.
Donald and Susan's marriage was on the rocks. He intended to take her to a Bed and Breakfast for the weekend to save what was left of their marriage. On the way there he got lost and they ended up in the country. Instead of focussing on the road he was distracted by his nagging wife. They had an accident, he lost control over the vehicle and it landed in a ditch. They climbed out of the wrecked vehicle and saw a road sign indicating a town one mile ahead. While walking to this town Susan suddenly stopped, she heard music coming from inside the woods. She ignored Donald and walked into the woods. He followed her. What a great story, a pity that it is only 17 pages...
Music of the Gods is a quick read (roughly ten pages), but there's a lot going on in this story. With their marriage on the rocks, Donald and Susan are headed to a Bed and Breakfast for the weekend in hopes of salvaging what's left of it. Unfortunately, the two bicker continuously during the drive, and - as the story opens - we find them lost on a country road. Distracted by this, Donald loses control of the car as a truck comes at them from the opposite direction, ultimately landing them in the ditch. Since it's only a mile to the next town, the two of them set out on foot to get help. This is where things get interesting. Is Donald dreaming about what transpires next, or is there some higher force at work? I love stories like this where the ending is open to interpretation. Music of the Gods is definitely a thought-provoking read.
a short, quick read and very enjoyable. a couple going away for a save-the-marriage- weekend, are in an accident which leaves the car in a ditch. as it's only a mile to the next little town, they head out for it. however, they get distracted by other things and then the husband wakes up.
the only glitch was that a truck caused them to go off the road into the ditch and then kept on going. even in a little back woods, off-the-beaten-path, country road i think the truck would have stopped. that part was not that believeable. after that the rest was good.
