This is an entertaining tale of a young Irish lad's trip to New York and his adventures in America in the early 1900s. The book has interesting characters and plot twists and turns, including a murder mystery. As one reviewer noted, the book did seem to end a tad abruptly - perhaps the author would consider writing a sequel and continuing the story.Product details

The Able Seaman Mate edition by William Cheevers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A view through a young immigrant's eyes of early twentieth-century America. Excellent demographic descriptions and character developments. A very entertaining read.
I enjoyed this book. The author gave a nice historical view of a trip across the US at a previous time. The character was interesting and drew your attention in. I recommend this book highly!
The author has a talent for narrative that is fully realized in this book of a young immigrant's journey to America. The characters and the plot are fully developed and the tale leaves one hanging on the edge of one's chair as events unfold. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
Author William Cheevers provides a glimpse into America's cultural history in this beautifully written tale about Irish immigrant James Patrick Delaney adjusting to life in America.
Cheevers reveals the details of Delaney's journey from Ireland to New York with keen observation and masterful control of words. Choice words and fresh, image-dense narrative make for stirring, rich and vibrant setting
"No wider than West Street, Ludlow was lined with tenement buildings
and awning-covered store fronts. Men in white shirts and suspenders sat
on stools behind stalls offering clothing, housewares, fruit and vegetable and
fish on chipped ice. Hams and sausage and plucked chickens and ducks hung
from hooks and voices in myriad tongues and dialects contented with the iron
wheels of freight wagons and pushcarts and the smell of the narrow, crowded
street blended humanity, horses and meat flavored coal smoke."
The characters are equally unique and palpable and their unstilted dialogue reveals the characters different cultural backgrounds. Delaney's determined, loyal and genuine personality comes through in his deep respect and love for his mother and the friendships that he creates with unlikely characters such as Murphy, the surly but experienced and respected sea man who teaches Delaney about working on the boat and by a twist of fate, facilitates their entry to New York; and Willy Gantz, whom Delaney treats like anyone else, despite the fact that most shun him because he's the only "colored" man on the crew.
Cheevers does a beautiful job of showing Delaney as the everyman struggling to make a life and name for himself in the early twentieth century America, exposing not only the hardships and changes in Delaney's personality and character, but also the role of the immigrants in building America. Though the ending does come somewhat abruptly, Cheevers maintains an even tone and pace in the rich language that holds the reader's interest.
The Able Seaman's Mate is an exquisitely written, poignant read that also serves as a wonderful tribute to the cultural melting pot of the country.

A very nice account of America in the early twentieth century with well-developed characters. A very entertaining read. I highly recommend it.
A good account of the time period, with authentic characters and a well developed story line. Well worth one dollar! I like the fact that the story is about ordinary people making their way through the world. Nice change from the popular "super" somethings that are so prevalent today.
Truly enjoyed his journey from Ireland to the US. An interesting life this young man had. Just wish there was more after he ended up going back to sea. And then what happened????
